In March 2003 work was commenced on the Epworth Eastern hospital
at Box Hill, at a cost of $85 Million. The hospital had a 210-bed
facility completed in April 2005 and opened to patients on 30th
May 2005. Epworth has also extended its existing partnership with
Peter Mac at the Box Hill site. Peter Mac has three radiotherapy
bunkers at the Epworth Eastern Medical Centre (formerly known as
Box Hill Gardens Medical Centre).
Eventually the new six-storey building will have an air bridge linking it to the existing Box Hill Hospital,
which will provide prompt and easy access between the two hospitals for doctors, patients and clinical staff.
For many years the Lions Club of Box Hill has provided
support for the Box Hill Hospital, and with the arrival of a new
hospital in the area the club looked at ways it could provide support
for the new facility and the community. As a result patients undergoing
chemotherapy at Box Hill's new Epworth Hospital will be seated in
comfort thanks to a donation from the Box Hill Lions.
The Box Hill Lions Club presented Dr Peter Hughes, Chief
Executive Officer of Epworth Hospital, with a cheque for $22,500,
to pay for the recliners in the Chemo Unit. The recliners selected
are unique in that they have inbuilt trays for allowing easy access
to insert patient IV's and can also double as a tray for the patient's
morning tea.
